Route of Stone

Karst and the Brkini

Cycling all the colours of the Karst and Brkini in three days

From the south to the north of the magical Karst plateau, along tranquil and scenic trails through pristine nature with stops for the viewing of worldwide and lesser-known attractions and the tasting of local delicacies, runs the unique cycling Route of Stone along the Karst and the Brkini.

In three stages across three days, experience the land of mythology, subterranean caverns, Lipizzan horses, prosciutto, Teran wine, and unique settlements built of stone. You can always revisit and enjoy each stage separately, too.

Kozina - Lipica / 26,7 km

Mythical landscape, karst caves and white horses

The first stage, running from Kozina to Lipica, takes you into the discovery of the greatest wonders of the Karst and the Brkini, the Mythical Park in Rodik, the world-famous Škocjan Caves UNESCO heritage, and the Lipica Stud Farm with its cherished Lipizzan horses.

Lipica - Štanjel / 32,8 km

Karst phenomena, stone and architecture

From Lipica the way leads on through the Karst Living Museum, amid karstic natural phenomena and dry stone construction to the unique botanical garden in Sežana, then along calm commons and quaint villages to Štanjel, a pearl of karst architecture and culture.

Štanjel - Cerje / 30 km

Vineyards, prosciutto, commons and trails of peace

The third stage heads from Štanjel through typical karst landscape between vineyards and meadows, to a visit of a genuine karst prosciutto producer and lunch on a local farm, all the way to the impressive Monument of Peace on Cerje, the meeting place of the walks of peace.

Unique Experiences with the Local Guides

Royal Experience of the Karst

Foodie pampering and majestic Lipizzan horses

After meeting the white Lipizzan horses at the Lipica Stud Farm and a welcome glass of champagne, a horse carriage will take you to Vilenica. This mystical cave, Europe's oldest tourist cave, is also a domain of poetry and the arts. The experience wraps up with a royal dinner in the village Lokev.

Living Stone and Wild Flavours
